Hello,
We are presently using Actuate along with MAXIMO 6.2.6. We have approximately 75 custom reports that we have developed using Actuate. We will be upgrading to MAXIMO 7.5 (or 8) sometime during fiscal year 2015. We are considering developing these reports using Cognos BI as opposed to BIRT.
Has anyone used Cognos along with MAXIMO 7? Will you please share your experience (pros and cons, strong/pain points, dependencies, user experience etc)?
One of the recommended approaches strongly suggested by Cognos is to execute these BI reports against the "Framework model" (as opposed to directly connecting to MAXIMO OLTP database). Has anyone created similar framework model that can be used for Cognos reports?
I am fully aware that the actual report/s requirements dictate the structure of Cognos framework model and a particular framework model may not be suitable for everyone. However, for accommodating most of the reports presently delivered by BIRT, did anyone created Cognos framework model ?
Also, are you aware of any consulting company that can provide a similar service (e.g. a Cognos framework model that can be used for majority of reports for MAXIMO)? This way, we can take the base framework model and focus more on developing the reports using Cognos.
We will appreciate the feedback.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

We use Cognos for the bulk of our reporting, not by choice, but by edict from on high. We currently do not integrate any of our Cognos reports into Maximo, we simply have users running them from outside of the application. When we upgraded from 6.x to 7.1, we tried a Cognos integration for the Work Order Details report. We have since given up on that and are now using a customized version of the BIRT work order details report from within Maximo. The big issue we had with Cognos was performance, particularly for users who have bandwidth constraints. One thing to note is our implementation is probably not typical as the Cognos environment was a Enterprise wide implementation outside of our control and not a dedicated instance to support our needs.
I'm not sure exactly what a "Framework Model" refers to, but we do not point any of our reports to the live production database. Oracle, as of 11g (I think), allows you to open up read only access to a standby database, so that is where we have all of our reports pointing. Reporting often is the biggest load on your database so pointing it away from live production is always a good idea when possible.

Hi. You can find how Maximo creates the Cognos Framework Model at the recording available on this page This functionality enables you to create the FM Models outside of Cognos using the Maximo Integration Functionality and applications.
Also, more details on the Maximo-Cognos Integration including the reference materials are available here
Thanks

Thanks Pam for letting us know about the information on Cognos Framework models and integration hooks.
