Naming PM, Routes and Job plans

From: Javaid Ansari (2014-03-26 14:47)

Hello All,

We are planning to configure Job Plans, Routes and PMs in Maximo 7.5 oil and gas.

What will be the best practice for naming these activities? Objective is to have intelligent name which can give brief detail on the contents.
In the older system currently planners and maintenace team have created multitude of records which are not manageable.
The asset types we are dealing with are: MECHANICAL, EI&C/SCADA, PIPELINE, TANK, PSV, PV.
Thanks
Javaid Ansari

Why would you use intelligent names when there many other fields available on the records to do that. You can use classifications, one of the other existing fields or add a new field and a domain to group your records. Intelligent names are difficult to maintain and manage over time. Your current system is a good example of that
.

I would agree strongly with Kevin's response. Too often people get mired in coding too much data into 1 field. Utilize the powerful database as it was intended, multiple fields for containing varied information. Your freedom later will not be constrained by field length, abbreviations, etc.

Classifications are the cleanest and most powerful solution you have for organizing what is often pretty complex data.
Most people never touch Classifications….which is a shame because it’s standard functionality that’s just sitting there.
