If they are in a hierarchy, you can set the children up to inherit the reading from the parent.
MIF is one good option, we have developed an Excel sheet that collect all the information, meter name , asset , reading etc.. and post all information back Maximo.
Another way , you might create custom application based on site table. Add new none-persistent field to capture the new reading and with automation script / new bean class you can apply the value to all assets within the site. you can group the every related set of asset and select the group name on applying the reading.
