Re: Users afraid of automation

Ah Miranda . . . it takes a computer to really screw things up! Sounds
like your guys have some history! You absolutely MUST have a manual backup
system. They need to be able to go to paper to verify what needs to be
done and when . . . you start using maximo exclusively and when it fouls
up, you have a mess to contend with . . . and the responsibility falls on
those that have to get the work done, not on the computer system . . . so,
yes, they are going to be extremely skeptical of the computer, as they
should be.
]I would suggest moving them into it slowly . . . sounds like right now
they manually generate each pm, automate a report to generate weekly
showing the pm's pending generation . . . once they have seen it meets what
they are doing manually, maybe they will start allowing a selection of pm's
to be generated, or even allow them to generate automatically? . . . then
start increasing the timeline to get to the time span you are looking to
automate . . . quarterly?
Over time when they see they are spending time doing something that could
be easily done automatically . . . they will get onboard. But the first
time you A wrongly generated PM . . . they will shift right back to manual
control . . .
Are you still putting all the PM's on paper? or are they working on
handheld devices? using manual entries or scanners? . . . there are lots
of ways to automate things, but each of them is another failure path to
contend with. These guys have to see what is in it for them before they
get onboard . . . does a signficant reduction in the time it takes to get
to the work mean streamlining of resources? And if their resouces do get
streamlined when the automation fails will they still be held responsible
to accomplish the same amount of work with the lesser resources? . . .
Good luck with your automation!
