When disallow both negative balance and availability

From: samir khodair (2016-08-09 21:46)

Dear specialists,
Recently I asked by IBM to choose disallow both negative balance and
disallow item availability to enable maximo to change WPMTL status to APPR
of work order when the material be received to store, my question is
What's the difference between current balance and item availability at that
time , I.e. when disallow negative balance and disallow negative
availability?
I see they will be almost the same and this will affect the reoder process,
I am correct?
Please help

Current Balance is translated to: "the number of items that are physically
on the shelf."
Available Balance is: {Current Balance} minus {Reserved Quantity for Hard
Reservations}

In other words, Available Balance is the balance you have on hand, minus the
quantity that are reserved for work orders.

Available Balance is what triggers reorder to happen. This is because if
you have (say) 2 quantity on hand, and you have 2 reserved, then the
Available quantity is 0. If your reorder point is at 0, Maximo will order
more.

I recommend disallowing a negative Current Balance, but allowing a negative
Available Balance.

Hi Shannon,
Thanks for your explanation which I fully agree with, actually my
environment configured as you suggest and it works fine, the point is I
have an issue with work order status WMTL, this status is comes automatic
when the user approve the work order instead of APPR if the planned
material is more than available quantities, this feature has been added in
version 7 related to materials status field , all things is working fine
with me for the above, except when the material be received to store,
supposed there's a corn task runs to change status from WMTL to APPR, but
this update not happen in my environment, I escalated to IBM support, and
they asked me to change the setting to disallow negative availability as
well as disallow negative balance, then I become In confusion regarding the
difference between current balance and item availability if I disallowed
both , and the impact of that required change on reorder process
Thanks for support

I disagree with their solution. Allowing negative available balance is an absolutely legitimate business requirement, and IMO is the recommended business requirement – otherwise planners will not be able to put reservations against items with no balance. That makes no sense at all, since the idea behind planning a work order is to project demand and make sure materials are available on the required date.

The crontask in question is WOMaterialStatusUpdateCronTask. I assume you have verified that it’s active, but there have been problems with it in the past – check the log for errors.

Even with the cron task active, we found a number of problems with the status change, particularly for cases where direct issue material has been received – we found that the status did NOT update as it should have. As a result, we ended up creating our own escalation, which runs nightly, to check and change the status of any work orders that need to be moved back to APPR.

Note that this behavior is also affected by the Options in the Organization application as well.

There’s a fairly comprehensive article on the IBM site that explains it all:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21683844

Hope this helps.
