I already suspect I can't but...
An existing system has items defined and in use for a number of years.
They should have been serialized -- they are valves that cost more
than most laptops, and are repairable -- but for whatever reasons did
not get created as "Rotating".
The existing system is v4 and it's moving to v75. I can probably flip
the bit, but what else would I need to do to get these items in a
rotating-like status?

Hi Chris: you can flip the bit to Rotating through the GUI if you have 0 balance (at least in 7.5 – not sure about 4). Once you do, of course, you’ll need to attach the Asset records in order to get a balance after that. I think the Average Cost will get divided by the # of Assets attached, FYI. You also need to identify the Global Rotating Suspense account, or un-hide the one on the Asset records, or both (not sure what will happen to existing asset records that are already marked as rotating if you add the Global Rotating Suspense Account after the fact).
Biggest advice I can give: make sure you have all of the Asset records identified for each item. If you don’t, it can cause chaos when a new one is identified, because it’s usually done via the work order when it’s broken.
Make sure that everyone is *thoroughly* trained on how to manage them – I found our users especially had problems with understanding how to send something out for an external repair.
Let me know if you need anything else – I’ve been through just about everything that can go wrong, and I’d hate to see anyone else go through the same troubles :)

Surprisingly these users are very comfortable with making new assets
for an established item. Let me give you the use case:
-a train car has many assets (subcomponents)
-as a train car comes in, very expensive and rebuildable components
may come off the train
-these components can be purchased new, or repaired at a much lower cost
-the component being pulled off a train car may never have been
serialized initially -- train cars delivered as "new" do not have a
BOM keyed into the system
-if the item has no asset number assigned, a new asset number would
be created so that when the item (now rotating asset) gets shipped to
a vendor, you move it to the vendor
-after rebuild and receipt, you move it back to the train car
(location on the train, if you can believe that)
So it seems that if I brought the balance to zero, labeled these items
with asset numbers, then brought them back in, I'd be good. The
existing process supports this new wrinkle.
Shannon, thanks a bunch.
