Sounds to me like you have two values with a unique attribute that are almost the same on that column.
Removing the space will leave you with the same value twice, violating the constraint.
Ex. 'item123' and 'item123 '
You may need to remove one of the records from the system, or somehow rename the offending record to use a different primary key.
