Tip of the Day #188

From: John (2011-07-08 23:37)

Subject: Managing Projects
The Maximo system can be used to "track projects" in terms of scope & cost. CPM schedules are important however for large projects which need to manage duration and resources. Large projects (especially government contracts) require a Work Breakdown Structure to better manage scope and cost. The WBS approach helps to establish a division mutually exclusive scopes (down to Cost Account). This technique helps forecast project costs using ETC and earned value. I personally prefer to setup the WBS inside the CMMS (or ERP) since this is where project-related POs, Receipts, Invoices, Work Orders and Labor Actuals reside.
Sometimes I see clients perform this project cost tracking effort in Excel. To me, this standalone data (and reporting) causes duplicate entry, and therein, causes unnecessary process steps. Some projects can be done on paper; some require a logic schedule; and some need both a WBS & a schedule.
