The challenge with anything complex is to adequately describe the problem, need, and solution without putting the audience to sleep.
Unfortunately, the toughest problems, require the most study.
At some point someone has to get into the details and understand the issues.
And, there has to be a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Regarding your Maximo system, 80% of all potential improvements are associated with the surrounding process and procedure.
Look for user community pain points, e.g. duplicate entry, too many clicks to perform an operation, missing report design/capability, lack of clear (update) roles.
Also look at functionality currently outside of Maximo (but related to asset/facility management) and ask why and why not (use Maximo).
The one example I often use is Project Cost Tracking.
