We are just about to start upgrading from Maximo 6.2.2 to 7.5. Our User base is about 500 Users (50 concurrent). We have made NO customizations, and use TRM Rules Manager. We heavily use the Work Order (and related) modules. Our use of procurement-related modules is very minimal. We also use Industry solution 'Maximo for Utilities'. We have about 15+ MEA interfaces. Has anyone gone through a similar upgrade ? If yes, what was your experience with the IBM-provided upgrade scripts ? Any big 'gotchas' ? Did you use any consulting firms for all, or part of the upgrade ? Any other general tips with this upgrade ?

Hi,
We went from 4.1.1 to 7.x currently on 7.1.1.6 and we use most of the applications including purchasing. We started about three years ago and had eight separate installations. As part of the upgrade we wanted to merge all of the data into one database.
We used Austin Tetra Equifax to determine the common companies.
Biggest issue with importing was getting the common spare parts identified. We used IHS Intermat to help with that.
If you have just one installation then you don't need to do these two steps.
We used Interloc Solutions and imported all of the data. We did not use the upgrade scripts. They have a data loader tool to import data through the integration objects. They'll also be able to assist with upgrading your current interfaces.
Worked very well for us.

For our upgrade to 7.1.1.6 from 6.0.4, with around 300 primary/secondary
users, and 400 requestors, it sounds like our implementation may be similar
in size. We also have an industry solution, Life Sciences.
We did use the upgrade scripts and we did them internally. My coworker who
is really good with oracle and sql took them on and worked through the
errors in about a month. BTW our DB size in v6.0.4 was around 15gb. I
compare this with the effort it would have taken us to rebuild all of our
configuration changes and I think we made the right choice.
We used Interloc on a limited basis, they moved our 5 or 6 java
customizations to v7 and they came onsite for a week to help us with the
first installation, where we documented everything out then performed the
rest of the installations on our own. They also sent someone to help us out
during go live week.
In regard to MEA/MIF, we have one flat file external system that was built
by EDI that is used purely for data loading master data, with around 20
enterprise services. There was a week or two of work to get all of those
working correctly. A lot of alias conflicts, a few inbound setting
restriction changes, and if I recall I did have to rebuild the location
enterprise service using the out of box MXOPERLOC object structure.
If any of you are planning to attend the Life Sciences user group next
month, we are presenting our upgrade experience. We did it mostly internally
with limited outside help and saved probably over 500k. The entire project
took about a year but when you consider all of the validation paperwork we
have to do in the Life Sciences world, and the fact that we rebuilt around
100 reports from Actuate and Cognos into BIRT, that is not unreasonable.

Hi Dinesh!
I had a much smaller upgrade that I did from MAX 6 to MAX 7.5, with Oil & Gas & Calibration. They only had a handful of custom classes in place and a single MEA Interface for outbound Invoices.
The upgrade utility worked great! We only had to recompile most of the custom Java Classes to work in 7.5. We did have to change some of the User Exit classes to work correctly but other than that was pretty painless

While we are a much smaller intall, roughly 20 concurrent users, we
decided to go with a complete reimplimentation. For us the decision came
down to the quality of data in our exisiting maximo and the future uses.
We took this as an opertunity to rebuild the location hierarchy, it
needed it! But I built the location hierarchy in Excel and used the new
application import to get the data in. I did move the item masters and
inventory in use, and quntities, across easily with the application
import. We did not have any integration with other systems. Be aware
that the MEA has been slightly revamped in 7.x to the MIF, with a few
pieces in the mea split into seperate modules. The one interesting thing
we saw since going live on August 1, is that Internet Explorer 8 has a
perfomance hit. But upgrading to Internet Explorer speed things up
noticably and to acceptable levels. The user interface improvement in
7.5 have made everyone happy.
