Hi,
Our servers are set up to update the virus definitions when Symantec releases them. So basically we get three or four a day. This then kicks off a quick scan of the server.
Most of the time users do not notice this. But the servers max out the disk queue and CPU usage goes up to 100%. If users are trying to run reports the report server just does not respond. Or does so slowly.
These are VMWare Quad Xeon 2.4 GHz 8 GB ram servers so I don't think the hardware is an issue.
Running version 7.1.1.6 WebSpeher 6.1.
I don't have control of the servers themselves and the people that do think the virus scans are not an issue.
Thanks,
Dave Bone
I have seen an IBM note on Virus Detection software and they said that you
had to remove the Virus protection software from the Servers. We had this
problem initially and once the virus protection was removed the problem
went away. How to convince the people responsible for the servers to
remove the virus proetction softwafre is another story.

Isn't there a way to set up the virus detection software so that it will
only update like at 3am or something?

Hi,
Yes there is but our security team keeps saying that the virus software cannot be causing any issues.
But I can show them the disc queue shooting off the charts just after an update is completed.
I guess they think that's just voodoo making that happen?
