How do you get a custom field to appear in the list of available fields

I created a custom field but it is not listed under column display when I search for the field to modify a Start Center template. I want to add the custom field to a portlet in the Start Center.

Thanks for the link. I tried this method but still was unable to load all the fields. I was able to solve this issue using a different method. Basically I used a REPLACE statement in the XML to insert the querycolumn I wanted to appear the in the list of available fields.
