Tip of the Day #212

From: John (2011-12-17 22:32)

For a large geographic area where you have lots (maybe hundreds) of open/routine maintenance tickets, you normally try to get to the oldest call first. Of course emergency work is always attended to promptly. But for routine maintenance, which is spread out geographically, you could be driving from point to point based on work order age. Unfortunately you could be zigzagging the county and wasting a lot of productive time driving.
One alternative approach is to sweep up all open work (Priority=3). Assume this work scope to be something like roach calls as with a sewer collections line department.
Calculate average time spent at each location and with this information identify total number of stops a crew could perform in one day (taking into account drive time).
Sort this list by age. And from this list, then:
(1) Find the oldest work order in the list by age, and then
(2) Identify all other work "in the area" based on a radius. Adjust radius so as not to exceed maximum stops per day.
For this process to work you would need to
~~Have each asset/location stored with a Latitude/Longitude value.
~~Build a report which runs against the database, using the above parameters, and calculate the "days work" by crew. This report could also forecast out total number of days of backlog.
