scheduler 7.1.1

From: michaeljdougherty (2012-01-31 13:39)

We are evaluating the scheduler program? Has anyone had any success with this program or any recommendations how to use it effectively? Also, if you have any idea of the upgrades they made in the later version, can you let me know what they may be?
Thanks!

From: Grant Utter (2012-02-06 11:28)

Michael
I did an evaluation of Scheduler 7.1.1 for a client that identified some functionality gaps, the most serious being its lack of a resource levelling function.  This makes scheduler impractical for handling a large number of routine work orders sharing common resources.  However, I understand that resource levelling is to be included in the next product release.
Because it was a large site, my recommendation was to associate work orders to work groups (crew?) and to also link each labor record to their respective work group using the resource location field.  Then query work orders by work group and labor by the same resource location.  Assume there should be sufficiently few work orders to balance the group's work order schedule to the group's labor availability using the Gantt chart.  This approach might be impractical at a very large site having many work groups since each work group would have to be scheduled independently.

For a small site, it may be possible to balance all of the site's work orders to the site's labor availability using drag-n-drop on the Gantt chart.

Sorry, Michael, I'm not in touch with any company actually using Scheduler yet.  Based on the lack of response from this group to your original question, my guess is there aren't many.  Too bad.  Properly set up and applied, it can be a valuable tool.

Quick question about Akwire. Do you use the scheduling solution for all aspects of your work scheduling? Our company generates PMs weekly and have CM workorders when users enter them. We have quite of great deal of PMs and many of them create children work orders with them. Do you find this product to be effective? For instance, currently a manager on a Monday morning will look at the work orders to be completed that week, and manually write a paper of who will perform what. Will Akwire simplify this? Is it time efficient?

Thanks for the input.

Michael, are you sure that you need a scheduling tool? from the description
of your problem, what you need is to be able to do better work assignment...
If your planning (what do you need to do the job) information is quite good
and your scheduling information is done (when should you start the job
based on your work load and availlabe resources and work environment
constraints) , then you can easily use Maximo to do the assignment (using
assignment tab on Work Order tracking or Work Manager)....

Where does the assignment tab grab it's labor hours from? When I look at it, a lot of values are 0:00. I checked the work orders and the estimated duration has a value, but it does not carry over, so there must be a different place it gets the estimated hours from.

from planning tab.
Let say you plan 2 MEC (crafts) for 4 hours.... then on the assignment tab
you will find 2 lines for MEC where you just need to put the name of the
laborcode under each assignment. If you want to split a task between 2
labors, then you can add a new assignment ligne directly in that tab....

OK. Say we have one parent work order that has 20 children associated with it. Normally we assign the work to the parent and close out the parent work order, ultimately closing out it's children at the same time. Would we have to add labor hours on the planning tab for each children work order for it to show up in assignment manager as a time, or will the parent work order only matter?

If you plan on the top parent, then you can do the assignment on the top
parent only.
but let me ask you... Are these route WO`s ?
Usually Route WO are handled that way.... One top WO on which you plan,
schedule assign and report actuals. You use a custom Work Order Print to
have all 20 WO`s information in a summarized format and not 20 copies of
work order print report (or use a mobile solution that handle routes
adequately)

How would you go about doing the WOs information in a summarized format? I believe right now each WO prints individually.

If you plan on the top parent, then you can do the assignment on the top parent only.
but let me ask you... Are these route WO`s ?
Usually Route WO are handled that way.... One top WO on which you plan, schedule assign and report actuals. You use a custom Work Order Print to have all 20 WO`s information in a summarized format and not 20 copies of work order print report (or use a mobile solution that handle routes
adequately)

From: Grant Utter (2012-02-07 10:34)

I happen to have a different opinon, Mohamed.

I recommend the use of a scheduling program in conjunction with Assignment Manager.   With Scheduler, you would query all backlog work orders by work group to display in the Scheduler Gantt chart where you could then shift the work to balance with the available labor. Work orders and tasks will automatically shift to respect any logic that has been planned. After saving the group's schedule, you would then use Assignment Manager to allocate the scheduled work to individuals. This will ensure you have considered all of the potential work from the backlog, and are maximizing the availability of labor for each craft.  You can also use Scheduler's PM Forecasting to do long-term scheduling.  The next release of Scheduler will provide automatic resource levelling.  I believe Akwire also provides this functionality.
This is functionality that can't be replicated with Assignment Manager alone (which I have never considered to be a viable scheduling tool).

Grant,
I`m not saying he doesn't need a Scheduling program. Michael's problem
description doesn`t look to be related to the lack of scheduling.

Bottom line, what I`m saying is that you don`t need to use a scheduling

we are using Akwire too for ADM NA implementation. Much different than Scheduler that comes with Maximo.  Does not need much customization.
Thanks,

All,
We use Akwire by Solufy Information Technologies. This is a great tool that works very well utilizing Maximo data.

Sorry, Michael, I'm not in touch with any company actually using Scheduler yet. Based on the lack of response from this group to your original question, my guess is there aren't many. Too bad. Properly set up and applied, it can be a valuable tool.

Have you come across any scheduler application that works well alongside or within Maximo?

Do you feel awkwire is a good tool? Does your company deal with a lot of PM workorders? How far in advance are you able to schedule work and does the tool leave room for last minute adjustments?
