Tip of the Day #226

From: John (2012-03-24 03:09)

Subject: The Work Order Number
Some sites are using a fairly large number. Perhaps the initial seed was quite
large, e.g. 1000000
This is a 7-digit number.
I understand the need to make absolutely sure they never have conflicting
numbers. But I wonder if there might be an easier way. Most people can
remember between 6-7 digits but only if they keep repeating the numbers to
themselves. Also remember that the longer the number, the higher the probability
a mistake can be made by maintenance staff (or dispatch), especially over a
phone.
So, what if we had a work order number as follows:
9044427
…maybe there would be value in using the YY- or YYYY- as a prefix??
Every year the administrator would however have to reseed the wonum prefix.
Example output would be: 12-44427
For the above to work, you must never have more than 99999 work orders in one
calendar year.
Thus the worker would only have to remember the 44427 portion.
~~ your thoughts?
