Upgrade MXES 6.2.2 to v7.5

From: Ethan (2012-03-26 19:42)

Has anyone moved from Maximo 6.2.2 straight to v7.5 and if so would you recommend it. Initially, we looking at moving from 6.2 to 7.1 then 7.5 but after a meeting with our IBM rep. they suggested they we looking at move from v6 to v7.5 as and alternative to avoid duplication of effort.
I have already upgraded my 6.2 database to v7118 and build the v7.1 environment on a development box. I'm assuming the only thing next would be to bring that v7.1 environment up to v7.5, but still to do some additional research concerning this approach.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

From: Shannon Rotz (2012-03-27 11:02)

I'm just on the point of doing an upgrade to 7.5 myself . did they say there
was a utility to go straight from 6.2 to 7.5? I was under the impression
you have to go through 7.1.

Not really.  I'm going to submit a PMR to really see what all is involved with this approach but from the small amount of research that I've done the key is the database being @ 7118 or 7119.  By me already having the v7.1 environment built I can install v7.5 which will rename the maximo folder and create a new one for v7.5 below is a link to a webcast covering this install.  Of couse this is being done in a test environment first.

Make sure your fix packs can support the upgrade path
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21266217
OR to summarize
7.1.1.10 to 7.5 then to 7.5.0.2
7.1.1.9 to 7.5 then to 7.5.0.1
Having been on 7.5.0.0 and applying 7.5.0.1 I would highly recommend going to 7.5.0.1 and not 7.5.0.0

Shannon,

IBM's response:
 Hello Ethan
My name is Max Logan. I am sorry that I missed you by phone just now. I understand that you have questions about upgrading to Maximo 7.5. I am happy to assist.
First off, thank you for pro-actively providing information on your environment. I see that you are currently running Maximo 7.1.1.8 on WebSphere 6.1. Considering that you upgraded from Maximo 6.2.2, you are well more than halfway home. Upgrading 7.1.1.8 to 7.5 is a much smaller step than upgrading 6.2 to 7.1.1.8.
Please refer to the following Maximo Upgrade Resources page. You can upgrade directly from Maximo 7.1.1.8 to 7.5 with no intervening steps. Maximo 7.5 is available from IBM Passport Advantage. Please be aware that Maximo 7.5 supports WebSphere 7.0 and not WebSphere 6.1, so you will need to upgrade your WebSphere as well. For your convenience, WebSphere 7.0 is included with the Maximo 7.5 install package.

Anyway, it would be very interesting to find that there is a path from 6.2 to 7.5.

OK – that’s what I thought – you do have to go through 7.1.1.8 or 7.1.1.9. I’ve been talking to this guy myself regarding this – just thought I might have missed something.

Of course, my upgrade is from 4.1.1 to 7.5 (yes, really!), so it’s BIT more complicated anyway :)

We are doing both 6.2.6 to 7.5 and 4.1.1 patch 05 to 7.5. For 6, we did have to step through 7.1.1.8 before 7.5. For the v4 sites, it is 4.1.1->4.1.1p9->5.x?->6.x?->6.2.6->7.1.1.8->7.5, then merge to enterprise instance. Not exactly sure of a couple of those versions, but that’s pretty close. It’s a lot more fun!.. ☺

after a meeting with our IBM rep. they suggested they we looking at move
from v6 to v7.5 as and alternative to avoid duplication of effort.

I have already upgraded my 6.2 database to v7118 and build the v7.1
environment on a development box. I'm assuming the only thing next would be
to bring that v7.1 environment up to v7.5, but still to do some additional
research concerning this approach.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Ron, I noticed that you are also planning to merge the databases into your
centralized Maximo 7.5 database. I don't know how far along you are on
that, but having done that many times (around 10 merge projects in just the
past couple of years), I can tell you there are lots of things to address.
You may already be aware of everything involved but you'll want to compare
all the DB's to be merged to identify required data model changes in the
target DB and remapping of columns and of course handle the re-sequencing
of every record (and syncing this up with associated LD's, Doclinks, and
other records) plus go through some business analysis if your standalone
DB's haven't standardized how they use fields (e.g. WO1 may have different
use for one incoming DB than it does for another so you need to map that to
a different or new field, etc). There are lots of other issues to sort
out if the existing DB's being merged aren't truly standardized in both
structure and use.
We built a tool that quickly maps, transforms and merges a 5.2 DB directly
into a 7.x DB to skip all the upgrades and handle the re-sequencing. etc,
automatically since when merging DB's you've ultimately got to do this sort
of data migration work anyway, but any way you do it it's a complex
project, or as you put it, a lot of fun!

Hi Ron: I’ve been told that 4.1.1 Patch 5 is fine – you don’t need to go to 4.1.1 Patch 9. I think you can skip that step.

The upgrade path for me is: 4.1.1 Patch 6 à 5.1 (via upgrade utility) à 6.2.8 (you have to install the 6.2.8 fix pack on top of the 5-6 Upgrade Utility to do that) à 7.1.1.9 à 7.5.0.1.

(Whew!!)

Shannon,
IBM's response:
