Default websphere password expiration

From: Jason Verly (2012-04-03 16:41)

IBM just announced that a default/built-in password for Websphere is set to expire on April 26. If you happen to use Websphere for your Maximo environment, I'd suggest taking a look at this and see if you are affected.

When I ran the gsk7capicmd utility referenced in the 2nd document, I got an error on a missing dll. I'm posting the response we got from IBM, just in case anyone else out there runs into the same issue. This is for Win2k8.
The reason this is occuring is because the dll's are not referenced in the PATH environment variable. I have contacted Websphere to have their document updated with the correct information. To resolve this problem do the following.
1) Choose my computer - > Properties - > Advanced System Settings
2) From the system properties menu that pops up choose the Advanced Tab
3) Click on Environment Variables
4) Under system variables search for "Path"
5) At the end of the current line insert ; as a seperator then add in the path to the gsk7 lib folder. On my environments it looks like this ;C:\Program Files\IBM\gsk7\lib the path may differ on yours (ensure the dll's are in this lib folder)
6) Hit ok and close out the menu, changing environment variables requires a reboot of the machine. Once done you should be able to run the command file.

Just so everyone knows, the default password is WebAS.
When you load up the plugin key using the key manager it will ask you for a password.
If your key does indeed expire then you can simply change it to be the same but remember to stash the password to a file.

That password did not work for me. Running Maximo 6.2 on Websphere 6.0.2.27.

The default WebAS password did not work for me either. I resolved the DLL issue by modifying the Windows PATH envorinment variable, but now I get Error: 16, and when I look up that error I get: "An invalid database password was encountered."

Hi,
I followed the instructions for ver 6 and just had one issue. They do not tell you to copy the plugin-key file to the C:\temp directory used in the command line.
Did that and it came back and told me the password did not expire.
Sounds like someone may have changed your password in the past.

I didn't use the C:\temp folder, I provided the command line utility with the path to the key database, which for me was C:\IBM\WebSphere\Plugins\etc\.
I was doing this on a demo server and attempted to change the default password from WebAS to the same, which causes the error 16. I tried it with a different new password and apparently it worked (there is no output from the command line utility). I tried again with a wrong key database password and received error 19: "An invalid password was provided or the key database has been tampered with or corrupted."
I need to upgrade it to the version where the -expiry switch works. Without the newer version you can't tell if it has an expiration date or not.
Thanks.

It will not allow you to change it to the same password, however you can immediately change it back to the original password without issue.
I believe the c:\temp in the instructions was just for an example. On WAS 6.1.0.41, I had to run the GSK against C:\Program Files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\etc\plugin-key.kdb and C:\Program Files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\config\webserver1\plugin-key.kdb, one of which was already set to no expire and one wasn't.

Hi,
I found four different plugin-key.kdb files. Three of them are set to not expire and the one in
C:\Program files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\etc\plugin-key.kdb
does expire.
Reading the documentation this file appears to be a template that is used to create the others and not really used by WebSphere. When the others are created it changes the password expiration based on your options and the default options do not set it to expire.
Guess I'll be rebooting my sandbox server early on 4/26 just to be safe.

I have to admit that I'm confused, guys. Am I correct in thinking that you
need to run IKeyman to check the expiry of the .kdb files? If so, where
does one get iKeyman? I find the article quite obscure.

TIA for the help.

The process IBM defined for checking and fixing the password expiration did not use IKeyMan, however you might be able to do it that way as well, I'm not really sure about that. They said to use the Global Security Kit utility, gsk7capicmd_64 (_64 only on 64 bit systems). On my installation that was located in c:\Program Files\IBM\GSK7_64\bin (again _64 only for 64 bit systems). I had problems running that utility because of a missing path entry. I had to add "C:\Program Files\IBM\GSK7_64\lib64;C:\Program Files\IBM\gsk7\lib" to the PATH system variable in order to get it to run.
This whole issue has been very confusing. I found a couple different articles that IBM has posted that were almost contradictory. One seemed to say it only applied if you use SSL and the other seemed to say it didn't apply if you use SSL. So I was never really able to determine whether this applied to my configuration or not, but I set the passwords to not expire anyway, just in case. I didn't want to guess wrong and have production go down in the middle of the day.
Hope that helps a little.

Yes, I sorted it out. Just found out (after the fact) that if you're on a
Windows box, you can actually do it from the Start Menu (thanks Ian
Wright!). Typical IBM to want someone to do it from a command prompt
instead - I don't think, culturally, they've gotten over the DOS days!

anyway, just in case. I didn't want to guess wrong and have production go
down in the middle of the day.
Hope that helps a little.

I have to admit that I'm confused, guys. Am I correct in thinking that you
need to run IKeyman to check the expiry of the .kdb files? If so, where does
one get iKeyman? I find the article quite obscure.
TIA for the help.

Hi,
I found four different plugin-key.kdb files. Three of them are set to not
expire and the one in C:\Program
files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\etc\plugin-key.kdb
does expire.
Reading the documentation this file appears to be a template that is used to
create the others and not really used by WebSphere. When the others are
created it changes the password expiration based on your options and the
default options do not set it to expire.
Guess I'll be rebooting my sandbox server early on 4/26 just to be safe.

6.1.0.41, I had to run the GSK against C:\Program
Files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\etc\plugin-key.kdb and C:\Program
Files\IBM\HTTPServer\Plugins\config\webserver1\plugin-key.kdb, one of which
was already set to no expire and one wasn't.

Without the newer version you can't tell if it has an expiration date or
not.

Did you run into the "CMS Java Native Library not found" when trying to run the key management software?

Hi,
I ran into issues trying to run the IKeyMan application until they updated the posts to indicate for WebSpher 6 you have to use the command line not IKeyMan. They buried that part about halfway down the instructions.

Hi,
The plugin in the etc folder on my system is set to expire but as I said earlier that appears to be just a template to use for the other files.
I ran the command line and found all passwords were set not to expire so I did nothing.
We restarted the servers this weekend and it's all working OK.
