Is the software vendor controlling your thoughts – and system design? Should one assume that all of the fields on the work order entry screen are the only ones you ever need? Are the choice of WorkTypes really the best for categorizing work? I'm sure they intended to think of every possible requirement in relationship to industry better/best practices…but stuff happens. It may be more appropriate for you to do your own reverse engineering. Have you considered interviewing the reliability engineers and maintenance manager and asking them what they need most? Ask them if they are spending a lot of time generating reports or wishing they could extract certain types of data (--which doesn't exist).
In addition to the above you could also do the following:
1) Go visit another site. Look at their screens. Ask about their process and outputs. Ask how they use the system to make more informed decisions, and
2) You're not a traitor if you go look at a competitor software product. Look at their main work order entry screen. Ask why they have different fields?
This is called benchmarking.
