Tip of the Day #240

From: John (2012-06-30 21:28)

If management is starting to worry about losing knowledge to retiring staff, they should build a plan of action.
It would be best to implement this strategy well before actual retirement date.
Start these processes:
»» Spot check the CMMS database for level of completeness, accuracy, and usefullness
»» Implement process to capture feedback for every work order.
»» Review open backlog (for stale, dups, priority, "now" applicability)
»» Review list of completed work (ask for comments on how we could have prevented this repair action)
Ask the staff member about to retire for his thoughts on:
»» Ask which assets are in dire condition
»» Ask, if standardized procedures are lacking
»» Ask which maintenance strategies need refinement
»» Ask what documents are missing from tech library
»» Ask what training is needed to help staff reduce mistakes, capture better data and make better decisions
»» Ask what features (or reports) are needed from the EAM system. Are we missing reports?
»» Ask ... Is foundation data missing? If so, what?
»» Ask if KPIs were helpful. If not, what do they suggest?
»» Ask how asset reliability can be improved
»» Ask about mobile benefits/potential
»» Ask about culture/buy-in to CMMS; is this an issue with working level?
»» Ask about capacity from plant production level perspective. For example, if you picked last years best week, (ask) what we could do to maintain that level of production all the time?
