Tip of the Day #241

From: John (2012-07-06 17:51)

Making use of Service Groups
There are two fields are on the work order tracking application/screen called Service Group and Service.
You could use the Service Groups (Parent and Child record) to define service categories – or – "type of work".
This categorization might be useful for grouping work to be performed in an upcoming outage. The outage coordinator (or the contracts administrator), prior to freezing scope and selecting contractors, could sweep up all work of similar categories. He could then bundle this work and issue a single RFQ.
This categorization method could also be used to perform grouping such as ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL, WELDING, HVAC, etc.
Then you could run a SQL command to review actuals todate and perform an averaging.
When urgent work is being created (e.g. with no planning) you could use these averages to get some idea as to scope size.
Note: there are some sites that perform absolutely no planning of their backlog. Thus when asked to the "size of their backlog" they can use this technique to come up with a rough estimate.
