Subject: What type of Scheduling is needed by most maintenance organizations?
As you know there are several types of schedules and scheduling processes. To list a few: project schedules, long range plans, daily schedule (or daily plan), outage/shutdown schedules, and, weekly maintenance schedules. Most every industry will have one of the above needs. Another point of note is that .....there are many scheduling software products that clients currently rely on (meaning the competition is rough). The area where IBM MAXIMO can make a huge difference (in my opinion) is by fully embedding the weekly maintenance schedule inside the EAM product. Many organizations only have very small planner/scheduler groups and therefore need a cleverly written software tool to help them reach this goal. Unfortunately 90-95% of all sites have never successfully created a resource-leveled weekly schedule. But the process could be as simple as 2 clicks - as done from the work order tracking application. Imagine the power, efficiency, and value-add to the organization.
There are some key design elements one should also be aware of:
1) Automatic resource leveling would be a key feature. This routine should balance the prioritized work against resource availability.
2) There are **no** logic ties typically involved in weekly maintenance schedules. If predecessor coordination is required this handled at daily planning meetings and by maintenance supervisors.
3) For the most part, the maintenance supervisors (and planners and operations staff) want to preview this schedule selection from a high level, make corrections to scope, discuss critical work in that week, discuss support craft interactions and complete this entire review in 30-45 minutes. Conversely they do not normally look at Task steps. Time is of the essence.
