Subject: Job Planner Role
Some organizations have Job Planners which were brought over from the trades. This in itself is good because they have solid understanding of the plant systems and maintenance. But in some cases they may not be good at estimating. There is a tendency for some to just focus on reactive maintenance. For example, if operations calls with an emergency the Job Planner creates the work request (or WO or SR) and enters initial data elements and changes status. He then "pushes" it to the Maintenance Supervisor. There may be so much of this activity that it becomes a major portion of their day. When asked about planning regular work, the answer is "we don't have time to plan work because of the emergency/urgent requests".
Consequently even "regular" corrective maintenance is handled in the same "reactive" manner. It was how they were trained.
One solution to the above would be to let operations process the initial request and let them communicate directly with the Maintenance Supervisor thereby removing the planner as the middle man.
