Tip of the Day #252

From: John (2012-09-25 02:03)

Subject: RESTART
Definition: when upgrading to next version, go back to out-of-the-box configuration; abandon customization; make it easier to upgrade going forward – and cheaper. In addition to these steps, the staff would conduct extensive data cleanup and review processes including roles/accountability.
When should a restart be considered?
--- People who customized system have departed -and- documentation is lacking
--- There are more than 2500 open work orders (with questionable status); the data is suspect
--- You're on a really old version; Unable to stay competitive due to older technology.
--- Maint doesn't believe this is their data and the only purpose of MX is to report time (so they get paid)
--- Many or most WOs have INPRG status
--- No analytical reports exist; no vision to create
--- No use of Failure Codes; no ability to run Pareto style outputs
--- No Planning/Scheduling function whatsoever
--- Mostly reactive environment. Maintenance sees nothing wrong with this.
--- Core Team is weak, ineffective or non-existent
--- No Business Rules or EAM system definitions
--- No awareness of other sites that have succeeded (eg benchmarking trips)
--- No on site CMMS expert
--- When whispers start in upper management circles, e.g. "maybe we should switch software (and go to something cheaper)"
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
