moving rotating assets in/out of service

From: richard_hoath (2012-10-18 16:09)

wondered what process others are following for moving rotating assets in/out of service ?
I was hoping the users could do this directly from the work order. eg. motor fails, create work order to remove and replace with a spare from the storeroom, and at same time do the asset swap.
but unfortunately the work order swap in 71 and 75 does not support a swap with rotating assets in storeroom locations. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21406321
perhaps I am missing something, but it looks like Maximo requires that a spare be moved to a non-storeroom location before it can be swapped into service to replace an existing asset subassembly. so, a 2 step process.
ideas?

Don't use rotating assets in 7.5 you can have repair locations
If you want to identify assest by part number then add it to a specification

The system is configured to push you toward the best-practice solution
of reporting a corrective maintenance work order against the failed
motor, and then creating a follow-up work order to install a
replacement motor if the original will not be repaired in-place. This
allows you to differentiate the cost, materials, and labor of
repairing a failed motor from the cost, materials, and labor of
installing its replacement.
We created a workflow to manage corrective maintenance work orders
that prompts the user to indicate whether a replacement asset was
installed. If it was, the workflow generates a follow-up work order,
strips out the asset, sets the work type and priority, and changes the
description to install a replacement rotating item in the originating
work order's location. That approach minimizes the clicks required of
the user while still preserving the ability to track costs for each
action separately.
