Tip of the Day #258

From: John (2012-11-09 22:22)

Maintenance Scheduling KPIs, Metrics and Analytics.
Data Quality analysis is important. A KPI would look at breakdown of WO Priorities in terms of distribution. If too much urgent/emergency work then this could be an indication of "false prioritization". If the range of work order priorities is too narrow then it could be difficult to really understand what is more important. If you have high priority work which has not started (after several months) then should be identified. If, you have high priority work which started and is still open after several weeks then most likely what happened was the "bleeding was stopped" but they continued to manage follow-on work (of lower priority) under the same/original work order.
Time-in-Status could be of interest. This KPI/metric would show average amount of time a given work order is in one status (prior to being completed).
Backlog Growth Trending. If the trend is showing continual growth then there should be evaaluation of techniques deployed to knock-down the growth trend (e.g. overtime, contractor assistance, scheduled shutdowns, and evaluation of recurring problems). Also, a lack of schedule can contribute to lost productivity. This could be a report which shows the growth over time, plus be broken-out by worktype, supervisor, or craft. Business Analytic tools allow for dynamic variables on screen and allow the user to toggle between categories.
Delay Code Tracking. This information would tell management where to look for process improvement, and/or work scheduling methods.
Weekly Schedule Compliance. If there is no measure of compliance then the working level will see the "list you provide" as being just that – a list. They will choose work they prefer as opposed to what's best for the organization. Additionally there is no expectation on the amount of work.
PM Compliance. Performance of PM/PdM activities should not viewed as optional or fill-in work.
Percent Reactive Maintenance. Too much reactive work adds unnecessary cost to the maintenance program.
