Performance issue logging into Maximo

From: Mary (2012-11-26 18:02)

We have had a problem for 1 week with very slow logging into Maximo.
This may be an authentication problem but I do not see any error
messages. It doesn't look like a database issue either. After logging in Maximo performs as usual, including return to start center. Slow logging in seems to affect all users but is intermittent.

No changes have been made to the the Infrastructre or software. No
changes in # of users. I did do a restart, cleared logs this past
weekend to try to resolve the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
Thank you,
Mary

It could be caching, when you restart a JVM the first person to login to it
will cause various servlets and so on to be recompiled and cached, the same
with each module. How many JVMs are you running? I'd expect the first user
in to each JVM to be much slower and the first person opening a module on
each JVM to be slow.

Hi Chris,
That's not the problem, unfortunately:) It's only slow when logging in. And even that is intermittent during the day. We have 2 ui jvms.

How long is "slow" vs how long is "fast"?
Are you able to monitor this, maybe automate it if you have tools to do so
and then trawl the logs to see what was going on?
Do they have complex start centers with a lot of KPIs / Result Sets? Are
you capturing any SQL via the Timeout property?
Chris.

"Slow" is 2-3 minutes, "Fast" is < 10 seconds. I can monitor this on my own login - sometimes it's "slow" and sometimes "fast". I am getting no helpful information from the logs. I do not have a complex start center. SQL timeout is 1000 and I d not see any info on this when I login. Aaargh!

Have your network people check to see it any router, bridge, or other network devices have changed (hardware and/or software setting) as sounds like an authentification slowdown.

Thanks Pat. That is what I am thinking as well and we are investigating that.

We've had similar issues. In our case it turned out that LAN had turned on a firewall rule on port 636 (the standard SSL LDAP port). This was causing WAS to sometimes take a long time finding a DC it was allowed to talk to.

Someone was able to analyze the logs on the firewall and they could see the traffic getting blocked.

You may want to try an app called "Process Monitor" on technet. It will show all process activity on your server, the path, and a result from trying to access that path.
I would try running this on the problem maximo server, attempting a login then scanning process monitor for any "Access Denied" results.
you will want to run this on a dev or low usage server... I ran it on my production and had over 100,000 results in about 15 seconds from user activity.
this may give you a small light while you poke around in the dark.

Our problem was that the Websphere setting "Support referrals to other LDAP servers" was set to follow. It should have been set to ignore.
Thanks for all of you input on this.
