Greetings Everyone,
My name is Glen Ray. I work for a manufacturing company in Portland Oregon as a maintenance tech.
The Company has had Maximo for many years. They are currently running V4.1
When they bought Maximo they bought a maintenance contract with it that has provided updated versions, but the company has never upgraded the program.
I was told we have a current version of 7.5. I was told the problem now is twofold.
First there are much higher priorities for IT and second you can't just install the new version without installing all the past versions first.
The Maximo IT guru left the company a few years back and now no one really has time for it.
In the mean time, my goal is to access the Maximo data through MSExcel and create some good reports that our version of Maximo does not supply. I've done some SQL query work and believe as soon as I can get a password (read only access) I'll be able to make things a lot easier on the techs and management. (Is there a generic password?)
I'm guessing some of the reports I create can be models for Maximo reports when the upgrades are finally completed.
I'de love to hear your thoughts on this.
Thanks
Glen
Crikey .. And I thought my client was the only one left on V4.x. You badly
need some Maximo expertise. Can't you hire a Maximo consultant for a few
hours here and there, until you upgrade? (Of course, there are a lot of
Maximo consultants that don't know V4 at this stage since it's so old.)
How many users do you have?

Glenn,
I have been a Maximo consultant for many a year . . . live down here in
Brookings . . . I suspect the version you have is Maximo 4.1.1, the last of
the client server versions of the software. One of the simplest and best
of the Maximo versions for smaller company maintenance applications.
Moving to Maximo 7.5 would be a major change to your organization, you
would need far more IT support for the product as it is a web based system
now.
If you are already collecting all of the data you need, then the problem
seems to be the lack of reporting capability. The report writer that works
with Mximo 4.1.1 is SQR and it is a very powerful report writer. It is not
the most easy piece of software to get to know and understand, but my
suggestion would be to define the scope and requirements for all the
reports you have a need for and hire in an SQR report writer for a period
of time.
As for connecting to the data using excel or anyother third party tool . .
. it is quite possible, however you will need to understand the database
structure well before you attempt to pull any of the data across. I'm
assuming you are on either an oracle or sql server database.
You state you are in maintenance, are you also considered the maximo
administrator? do you have a designated maximo administrator?
Depending on your company and the busness needs, I would stay with maximo
4.1.1. rather than moving to a more complicated system . . . though
eventually your IT group will force the move as you can not upgrade you
operating systems and database versions beyond what maximo .4.1.1 requires.
Hope things work out for you,
John
