Java 7 with Maximo Development environment

From: e11271b (2013-01-24 14:34)

Our IS department wants to update all corporate laptops with Java 7.
My eclipse development environment is currently at Java 1.6.0.37, for Maximo 7.5.0.3 with BIRT reporting engine 3.7.1.
Question: Can I upgrade to Java 7 on my development laptop, without causing issues? Would it be as simple as just setting the compatibility to 1.6?
I believe this is the server version of Java.
D:\ibm\SMP\jre\bin>java.exe -version
java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build pwa6460sr10-20111208_01(SR10))
IBM J9 VM (build 2.4, JRE 1.6.0 IBM J9 2.4 Windows Server 2008 R2 amd64-64

Setting compatibility mode should work fine. I had Java 6 locally targeting Java 5 in for Mx71 using compatibility mode and never had any issues.
