I've taken it as gospel that a well defined location hierarchy is a Good Thing to have and until now have never questioned that.
However, the manager of our electrical distribution unit asks this question: what is the value of having locations in Maximo? They already track their assets in a GIS system and see it as unnecessary overhead synchronizing locations in GIS with locations in Maximo.
He proposes having just one Maximo location and having all the assets assigned to that one location. What's the downside of this? I can't come up with a good answer.

We are using a process similar to that for assets that are scattered around such as Man Holes, light and telephone pole, transformers etc. So far it has worked for us. The only down side we have really experienced is when they are not in the GIS system. We added a sub-location field on the asset record that provides the physical location.
