WebSphere 7 vs. 8.X

From: al_potanin (2013-04-21 23:22)

Hi guys,
We are in a process of upgrading Maximo from 7.1 to 7.5.
Stock Maximo 7.5 comes with WebSphere 7.1. At the same time WS 8 and 8.5 have been released but it costs something to get those versions.
I don't know WebSphere much so cannot justify pursuing installing WS 8.X instead of the stock one.
Do you know differences of 8.X and 7.1 in terms of Maximo support maintenance?
What are the benefits of upgrading to 8.X except for longer support lifetime?
Regards,
Alexey

My opinion for the moment is to stay on 7.x and go to the latest maintenance pack. WebSphere 8 is supported but not required. Here is a link to the What's New in WebSphere 8 - http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wasinfo/v8r0/index.jsp
There are performance, security and deployment improvements but without knowing more about WebSphere and configuring it, it is not needed. I am WebSphere 6 and 7 certified and can tell  you that Maximo only taps into about 15% of what WebSphere can do. I plan on getting certified in 8 in the near future and have played with it for the last year. I have zero clients running it as of yet for Maximo.
I hope this helps.

Thank you,
Lonnie Stone
