activeG's MapEngine vs. Maximo Spatial

From: bobcbarker (2013-06-12 17:26)

My organization is evaluating moving from Maximo 6.2 to Maximo 7.5, and we also want to include ESRI GIS integration to take advantage of our GIS datasets that show the location of many of our assets. The obvious choice is IBM Maximo's Spatial add-on, but we are also aware of activeG's MapEngine add-on for Maximo that appears to provide very similar functionality (possibly even better functionality?). Has anyone in the group already evaluated activeG's MapEngine and compared it to Maximo Spatial? If so, would you be willing to share your findings?

We use ActiveG and found it more robust. We are currently using it with Maximo 7.1. If you want I can send you a contact here. A GIS person and a Maximo person...

We have been using Maximo Spatial since version 7.1.1.5 and we currently on
7.5.0.4 (through 2 major upgrade from 7.1.1.5 to 7.5.0.0 and then to
7.5.0.4). I would say if you found no customization needs to the Maximo
Spatial (i.e. custom map tools, etc.), it works fairly robust OOTB and
upgrade can be simpler than activeG since it is a Maximo product.

Yes, we had customizations to be able to use the linear, red lining, and some other features on the map. If you can get by with the "out of box" option then IBM spatial should be fine.

Thank you to both Bob Blakley and Hieu Pham for your quick replies.
Bob, since you are using the activeG product, do you find that your users apprepciate the added flexibility that product appears to have, such as displaying maps directly on any module tab and not just on a "Map" tab, or being able to construct multi-table map queries directly on screen? These seems like features Spatial can't match, but I wonder how much extra work it is to set them up and maintain them, behind the scenes. Also, has it been an issue keeping Maximo and activeG "in sync" as you apply patches and do minor upgrades? Do the vendors just blame each other if something isn't working?
Hieu, you wrote that Spatial might be fine if we're not looking for customizations. What customizations are there for Spatial, other than the map tools you mentioned?
