Default view after report development is lettter/lanscape. How can this be modified by the report developer? Current view gets crowded after 7-8 selections are made yielding a poor report.

If I understand you correctly, From the Master Page Tab -> General select a type of custom, then you can make it any width you want.
If you are doing a lot of excel reports, then make a new template so you are not constantly adding columns each time you do a new report.
